# Queue and steer messages

> Keep writing during a Codex turn and choose when the next message takes effect

Codex lets you write follow-ups while a turn is running. A message can wait in the queue or steer the active turn.

## Queue a message

Type or attach context during a running turn. The main button changes from **Stop** to **Send** when the composer contains a message, files, or explicit context.

Send to place the message in the queue. After normal turn completion, Mains continues the run with the next queued message, including when its tab is in the background.

Queued messages retain their text, attachments, context, and conversation settings.

## Edit and reorder

You can edit or remove a queued message. Editing keeps its position and temporarily preserves the draft you were already writing.

Drag a row's handle or use Alt with the arrow controls to reorder. Sorting is unavailable while a message is being edited, sent, or waiting for uncertain delivery to resolve.

## Steer now

Choose **Steer** for a queued message to add it to the current Codex turn. Use this for a correction that should affect work already underway.

```text theme={null}
Keep the existing database schema.
Fix this in the validation layer instead.
```

Steering does not start another turn or apply a new model or directory setting to the active turn.

## Pauses and persistence

Stop, failure, archive, disconnection, or a backend change pauses automatic delivery. Resume the queue explicitly when you are ready.

If Mains cannot confirm whether a message was accepted, it keeps the local input until acceptance can be checked instead of automatically sending a duplicate.

<Note>
  Pending queue state is local and is not saved across an app close or reload. Send or preserve important drafts before restarting.
</Note>

The browser and Review floating chats show the same conversation queue. They do not create a second sender.
